Navy Reconnaissance

For most of his operational career, Phil flew the Navy’s land-based fleet air reconnaissance aircraft, the EP-3, shown here with Mount Fuji, Japan. It typically carried 32 or 24 aircrew, depending on the version. Phil flew as a navigator, electronic warfare evaluator, NFO flight instructor and mission commander. He flew classified reconnaissance missions, combat support and ocean search and rescue for civilians in distress over the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas. Phil flew in the Cold War, Desert Storm, Balkan conflicts and other post-Cold War operations. He served as officer-in-charge of EP-3 squadron detachments in a remote location in Southeast Asia and Allied bases in the Eastern Mediterranean and Baltic regions.*
