Desert Storm

Desert Storm

Phil and his EP-3 squadron deployed in response to Iraq’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait, which provoked the Gulf War and produced regrettable scenes like this. The war consisted of two phases: Desert Shield, which prepared for Desert Storm combat that ejected Iraqi forces from Kuwait. Phil flew in both phases. Preparing to support combat in a relatively unknown area was more challenging for electronic intelligence professionals like Phil than providing direct support to combat forces in this war. Phil agrees with President HW Bush’s decisions to rally the American people and Congress, seek a United Nations resolution and build a coalition of forces from 35 nations; as well as Bush’s decision to halt the war when the stated U.S. objectives were achieved. In other words, Phil agrees that it was better for the President to keep his word with the American people and the coalition than to march on Baghdad.*
