Naval Aviation Training

Phil and his flight instructor pose with their T-2C Buckeye at an air show in Denton, Texas. Phil earned his Naval Flight Officer wings at Naval Air Station Pensacola, transferred to Whidbey Island, Washington and trained in A-6E Intruders, which were all-weather medium attack bombers. He built experience as a fleet replacement bombardier/navigator flying mountain low-levels, dropping ordnance on range targets and qualifying to operate Intruders from aircraft carriers. Phil and his squadron mates also lost friends in a rash of aircraft accidents. Phil transitioned to land-based aviation and returned to Pensacola to complete an electronic warfare course at Corry Station before joining his first operational squadron in the Western Pacific.*
