Phil wore number 29 for his 8th grade boys club soccer team. Many of these boys played together through high school and still maintain close friendships. Their Colombian immigrant coach developed character and teamwork that their school coaches—also of diverse European and North American ethnic heritages—developed further. Phil was co-captain of his high school soccer team and recognized as most valuable player when they won the state championship. Phil refereed youth soccer for a brief period in the metro Washington area. Today, Phil cheers “U.S.A.” loudest for our national soccer teams and supports equal pay for the U.S. Women’s and Men’s National Soccer Team.*
