Child of the Space Race
Phil was the oldest of three children born into a middle class family in 1960s Denver, Colorado. Phil’s father joined the space race as an engineer. The family moved to Los Angeles then to Johannesburg, South Africa, where Phil’s dad worked in a satellite tracking station. Phil’s dad later worked on the Apollo-Soyuz project, the joint U.S.-Soviet space flight that marked the end of the space race. Phil spent his second grade in a white South African school, saw apartheid’s unjust oppression and privilege, went on family trips through wild game preserves and learned to play soccer. Phil’s sister, Jodi, serves as our campaign treasurer.
